Senior Engineer, Big Data - Medical Cost Grouper - Remote

JOB DESCRIPTION Job Summary

Provides senior level engineering support for information technology (IT) big data architecture activities on Microsoft Azure cloud infrastructure. Representing as a Forward Deployed Engineer, responsible for collecting, storing, processing, and analyzing large health care payor datasets supporting Medicare/Medicaid operations. Designs and builds data solutions on Azure Databricks, Azure Data Factory, and Azure Synapse with emphasis on performance, scalability, and high-reliability. Embraces AI-first mindset leveraging machine learning and advanced analytics to derive insights that improve member outcomes. Collaborates cross-functionally with business stakeholders to understand health care challenges and deliver end-to-end data-driven solutions.

Essential Job Duties

• Operates as senior Forward Deployed Engineer, taking end-to-end ownership of data solutions that solve health care payor business challenges.
• Designs and builds enterprise data solutions on Microsoft Azure (Azure Databricks, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse, Azure Data Lake) for health care analytics.
• Converts business requirements into technical architecture, design and implementation supporting Medicare/Medicaid operations.
• Leverages AI-first development practices including GitHub Copilot and Azure Machine Learning for predictive analytics.
• Codes, tests, and documents data solutions using Python, PySpark, Scala, and SQL with automated quality assurance testing.
• Builds data models for analytics supporting claims processing, quality metrics (HEDIS, Stars), and population health.
• Implements batch and real-time data pipelines through ETL, streaming, and APIs connecting diverse health care data sources.
• Partners proactively with business stakeholders (clinical operations, finance, provider networks) to translate needs into data solutions.
• Integrates data solutions with low-code platforms (Pega, Salesforce) for enterprise-wide analytics capabilities.
• Collaborates with cross-functional teams including data science, BI, and application development.
• Facilitates technical issue troubleshooting with infrastructure, Azure support, and vendor teams.
• Supports project planning and scheduling using Agile methodologies.
• Adheres to established enterprise IT architecture, Azure Well-Architected Framework, and HIPAA compliance requirements.
• Provides training and support to big data team members on Azure data technologies and Forward Deployed Engineer principles.

Required Qualifications

• At least 5 years of data management experience on cloud data platforms, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
• Bachelor's degree in IT, computer science, statistics, business, health care, engineering, etc.
• Experience with Microsoft Azure data services (Azure Databricks, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse, Azure Data Lake Storage).
• Experience with AI-assisted development (GitHub Copilot) and Azure Machine Learning.
• Proficiency in Python, PySpark, Scala, and SQL with experience in quality assurance automation.
• Experience with streaming technologies (Kafka, Azure Event Hubs, Spark Streaming).
• Experience integrating data solutions with low-code platforms (Pega, Salesforce).
• Understanding of HIPAA data privacy and health care data governance requirements.
• Forward Deployed Engineer mindset - ownership of data solutions end-to-end with business outcome focus.
• Experience with Agile methodologies and Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience building solutions with NoSQL databases (Cosmos DB, HBase).
• Critical-thinking and problem-solving skills with data quality focus.
• Ability to work in a highly matrixed health care organization.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills, and ability to collaborate with business stakeholders and cross-functional teams.
• Experience with Microsoft O365, Power BI, and Azure DevOps.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in the health care industry.
• Health care payor data experience including claims, eligibility, quality metrics, and regulatory reporting.
• Azure Data Engineer certification.

Pay Range: $79,607.91 - $172,483.8 / ANNUAL
